Evolution vs Creationism

Muslim scholars debate evolution vs Intelligent Design. Oh... wait... what year is this?

Creationists - this is how your arguments come across to scientists! Also, don't forget, a couple of centuries ago the church once insisted the world was flat for the same reasons. How is denial of evolution any different?

Revelation 7:1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth.

  1. Get your facts right, please. By about the third century BC no educated person believed that the earth was flat... look it up! In any case a mistake like this is really a scientific one not a religious one. (There is still a "flat earth society" with people going around measuing curvature on lakes and things trying to disprove the obvious. Is it possible that 'scientists' can also have agendas? ... surely not...!???).

The quotation from Revelations is also misplaced. This is a massive vision with much that is clearly meant to be symbolic. Even today if you were to take a look at a map, you could talk about your own "four corners" ie the extents to which you have travelled. There is only one reason to believe in such a strong literal interpretation - an agenda!

  2. Thanks for the correction. Seems I missed the mark with my example, there's a lot more to belief in a flat earth than I had thought. I should have used "the sun revolves around the earth" as my example instead.

Science finds the sun to revolve around the earth from observation and later finds the earth revolves around the sun by better evidence.

On the other hand, religion finds the sun to revolve around the earth, then starts interpreting the bible as "clearly symbolic" when science finds it to be wrong! The bible was never "clearly symbolic" to those who wrote it or early Christians.

The creation story is "clearly symbolic" to many Christians now, and the infallible word of god to others. How do you differentiate between the symbolism and the fact? Is the creation story fact or "symbolic" to you?

Job 38:13 "that it might seize the corners of the earth and shake the wicked out of it?"
Job 38:14 "The earth takes shape like clay under a seal."
Matthew 4:8 "Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their grandeur."
Daniel 4:11 "The tree grew large and strong. Its top reached far into the sky; it could be seen from the borders of all the land."

Want to excuse away these ones too? How about these ones ? For now I'll stick with the explanation that isn't contrived: Man alone wrote the bible.

  3. Where in the world do you get your "facts"?

The Bible speaks of the corners of the earth to refer to the four cardinal directions. We refer to the sun rising in the east and setting in the west, but we don't literally believe that is what is happening. Job 26:7, 10 and Isaiah 40:21-22 clearly refer to a spherical earth suspended in space.

I fail to see how Job 38:14, Matthew 4:8, and Daniel 4:11 even factor into this discussion. They've got nothing to do with a flat earth view, and you'd have to twist Scripture to make them even appear to say that.
